PTSD

PTSD is a mental health condition caused by a traumatic experience. While many people experience trauma, everyone responds differently. Some might have temporary feelings of anxiety or depression that lessen with time, while others develop PTSD. The condition usually emerges within three months of a horrific experience, such as a personal assault, an active shooter situation, or military combat.

PTSD causes a variety of disruptive symptoms, including intrusive memories, such as flashbacks and nightmares. You might also start to avoid people and places that remind you of your trauma and trigger your flashbacks. PTSD also causes negative thoughts about yourself and others. For example, you might experience guilt, or believe that others can’t be trusted. It’s also common to become increasingly irritable, have angry outbursts, or engage in reckless behavior.

Many physicians combine antidepressant or anti-anxiety medicine with therapeutic approaches, such as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), eye movement desensitization, and reprocessing (EMDR).

Studies show that people with PTSD have an endocannabinoid deficiency. Medical cannabis provides your endocannabinoid system with sufficient stimulation to reduce your PTSD symptoms. Medical cannabis also stimulates a different part of your brain than conventional antidepressants and provides an alternative approach to mental health treatment.

If you have PTSD, the team at Coastal Wellness Centers can provide a recommendation for medical cannabis.
